About Artcoco
Artcoco’s product line is anchored around the unique use of coconut fibre, sometimes referred to as coconut bark fibre.
Our products displaying different facets of the coconut fibre and include custom fashion bags, picture frames, trays, lamps and light shades of stunning originality.
Coconut fibre, the raw material of our artistic creations, grows on the palm trees supporting the new leaves which when mature have no need for the fibres' support and drops it to the ground.
It’s only traditionally used is for kindling. No other industry incorporates this amazing fibre making our products unique, eco-friendly and naturally sustainable.
Coastal villages collect the fibre in sheaves, providing them with a vital sustainable income.
Artcoco's History
Artcoco was first established in 1999 by Sarah Gavaghan, a qualified artist and formerly highly successful designer and manufacturer of fashion-world hats in New York. Sarah’s skills were augmented by her partner Nigel Spencer, whose artistic background and lifelong residence in Mombasa provided vital support. Through their enthusiasm, experimentation and refinement of techniques, a range of beautiful, high quality, unique products was borne.
Artcoco is now led by Ken Haji, a local entrepreneur and artist whose creative energy, technical design skills and attention to detail sees a continuation of quality oriented products and expansion of the product range.
Artcoco is an exciting and creative venture. The enthusiasm for the unusual natural material worked with is apparent in every piece produced. A desire to expand into additional markets, particularly internationally, continues to provide income and opportunity for the crafts people of the area.
